Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse 1 cup chana dal (Bengal gram) and soak for 30 minutes. Drain. Pressure cook with 2 cups water and 1/2 tsp turmeric for 3-4 whistles until soft but the grains hold their shape (do not let it become a paste).

  2. 2

Cut coconut into thin strips (about 1/4 cup). Soak 2 tbsp raisins in warm water.

  3. 3

Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan. Temper 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 cardamoms, and 2 cloves. When they release their aroma, add 1 tsp ginger paste and saute for 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Add the coconut strips and raisins (drained) and saute for 2 minutes until the coconut is lightly golden.

  5. 5

Add the cooked dal, 1 tsp sugar, and salt to taste. Add 1/2 cup water if too thick. Simmer on low heat for 10 minutes so the flavors meld. The dal should be thick and glossy.

  6. 6

Finish with 1 tsp ghee on top. Serve with luchi (puri) or steamed rice. A Durga Puja bhog essential.
